How to Check Your Car’s Oil

Oil Changes

Even if you schedule regular oil changes, knowing how to check your car’s oil level at home can help you save time and money. Thankfully, most new Acura vehicles include an electronic oil monitor–the Acura Maintenance Minder™–which can display your oil level on your dashboard, beneath your instrumentation. We’ll teach you everything you need to know below, so you can drive more safely on the roads near Scottsdale.

How to Check the Oil Level in Your Acura Car or SUV

When you first fill up your Acura with fresh oil, your Acura Maintenance Minder™ will give you a reading of 100%. Over time, that number will fall, and you’ll eventually receive an alert that it’s time to schedule service. (If you see the code “A,” you just need to change your oil. A “B” code means you change the oil, get a fresh filter, and rotate the tires.)  Although the system monitors oil life automatically, you should still know how to check the oil level in your car by hand:

  1. Park on level ground, and make sure that the parking brake is engaged. Let your engine cool for ten minutes or more.
  2. Locate the dipstick under the hood. Draw it out and wipe it clean with a rag.
  3. Reinsert the dipstick, and draw it out once more. Check to see that the level is within the lines labeled “Min” and “Max”.

If you need to add more oil, work slowly, use a funnel, and add a little bit at a time! Acura Ultimate Full Synthetic motor oil, recommended for your vehicle, is available at our parts department.

You might notice corrosion on your battery terminals while you’re working underneath the hood. We’d be happy to teach you how to clean it.

Why Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

Since your Acura Maintenance Minder™ will tell you when it’s time to schedule service, you might wonder why you need to know how to check your car’s oil level at all! Here’s why it’s important to get up close and personal with the lifeblood of your engine:

  • If your oil level is low, your engine can overheat. This can lead to significant or even irreversible engine damage.
  • If your oil has small metal particles in it, there’s a deeper issue and you need to see a mechanic.
  • If your oil smells burnt, it needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
