Performance

Engine
3.5-liter V-6

The 3.5-liter, VTEC® V-6 engine in the standard TL produces an impressive 280 horsepower and 254 lbs.-ft. of torque, while delivering an EPA Estimated Fuel Economy of 18 in the city and 26 on the highway.27

  • Superior breathing from the VTEC® variable valve timing and high-flow exhaust systems improves both power and efficiency.
  • All-aluminum construction, a hollow camshaft, and other weight-saving measures keep the larger engine lighter for better handling.
  • The Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system adjusts throttle response so it can be easy to modulate in slow speeds, yet highly responsive when high performance is called upon.
  • 27 Based on 2010 EPA mileage estimates, reflecting new EPA fuel economy methods beginning with 2008 models. Use for comparison purposes only. Do not compare to models before 2008. Your actual mileage will vary, depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.
3.7-liter V-6

The 3.7-liter, VTEC® V-6 is Acura's most powerful production engine ever built, rivaling the output of many V-8s. Dishing up 305 horsepower and 273 lbs-ft. of torque, it delivers a smooth, responsive feel, thanks to significant weight- and vibration-reducing measures.

  • Magnesium-alloy cylinder head covers with hardened aluminum cylinder sleeves help improve vehicle balance and power-to-weight ratio.
  • A forged crankshaft results in lower weight and increased strength.
  • A high-flow exhaust system increases the engine's power efficiency.
  • EPA Estimated Fuel Economy is 17 city / 25 highway with the automatic transmission and 17 city / 25 highway with the 6-speed manual.27
  • 27 Based on 2010 EPA mileage estimates, reflecting new EPA fuel economy methods beginning with 2008 models. Use for comparison purposes only. Do not compare to models before 2008. Your actual mileage will vary, depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle.
VTEC

Both engines use Acura’s VTEC® system, which stands for Variable Valve Timing and Electronic Lift Control. VTEC is a little like having an on-demand racing camshaft to give you high-rpm power without compromising low-rpm torque.

  • When engine speed reaches a designated rpm, the intake valves open deeper and longer to enhance airflow and allow the TL to continue to build horsepower at levels where other engines may run out of steam.
  • When used in tandem with the 2-stage manifold system, the driver enjoys plenty of low-end power around town and reserve power on the open road.
High-Flow Exhaust System

Both TL engines employ a high-flow exhaust system that greatly decreases power-robbing exhaust back pressure.

  • The system uses a wider, low-restriction catalyst.
  • A sophisticated hydro-forming process smoothes the inside of the sharpest bends in the exhaust system so the engine can breathe easier.
Drivetrain
Sequential SportShift Automatic

For smooth and intuitive shifting, the TL features a sophisticated 5-speed automatic transmission with the highest ratio spread of any 5-speed transmission in its class, providing strong acceleration in lower gears and relaxed, fuel-efficient highway cruising.

  • You can take full command of the transmission with steering wheel-mounted F1®-style Sequential SportShift paddle shifters.
  • In both automatic and manual modes, the transmission coordinates with the engine’s Drive-by-Wire™ throttle system for smooth gear transitions.
  • A tap of the paddle shifter when “D” is selected brings a quick gear change before returning to automatic operation when the TL has resumed a steady speed. This allows you to make manual gear changes when needed, such as for passing, without changing in and out of manual mode.
  • For quicker acceleration, select “S,” and the transmission allows the engine to rev higher before shifting. Using a paddle shifter in “S” puts the transmission into full manual mode, where you have direct control of all shifting.
  • When encountering a steep uphill or downhill grade, Grade Logic Control will instruct the transmission to hold a lower gear for better climbing or increased downhill engine braking.
  • When stopped on a steep incline, the Hill Start Assist feature helps ensure a smooth, secure start as it holds brake pressure momentarily to avoid rolling backwards as your foot moves from the brake pedal to the throttle.
6-Speed Manual Transmission

For those who consider no sport sedan complete without a clutch pedal, the TL SH-AWD now offers a 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission. This first-time combination of a manual shift and Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) makes the TL SH-AWD a true driving enthusiast’s delight.

  • The shifter features even shorter throws than the TSX’s acclaimed linkage for quick, confident shifting.
  • The clutch has low-effort movement to reduce leg fatigue and short pedal movement for faster operation.
  • The Hill Start Assist feature eases manual shift starts on inclines. Sensing an uphill grade, the system holds brake pressure momentarily to avoid rolling backwards as your foot moves from the brake pedal to the throttle.
Super Handling All-Wheel Drive

Though it has the same all-weather attributes of conventional all-wheel drive, Acura developed its revolutionary Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system to enhance high-performance dry-road handling. The result is enhanced high-performance cornering that simply can't be matched by front, rear, or conventional all-wheel drive systems.

  • This proactive system reads a wide variety of vehicle conditions to continuously determine the optimal level of power distribution between the front and rear wheels, and also between the rear wheels.
  • Power distribution is based on an analysis of wheel speed, steering angle, lateral G-force and yaw rate.
  • The system reduces understeer and increases stability by turning the outside rear wheel slightly faster than the rest of the wheels, rotating the vehicle through the turn.
Power Distribution

The Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system proactively distributes power between the front and rear axles and between the rear wheels based on an analysis of many conditions.

  • When cruising in a straight line, up to 90% of the power is sent to the front wheels for better fuel economy, and up to 70% of the power can be transferred to the rear wheels upon hard acceleration.
  • In a curve, up to 70% of torque can be directed to the rear—all of which can go to the outside wheel to improve cornering by directing power where weight has shifted.
  • Unlike conventional drivetrains, your cornering stability typically improves by accelerating through a curve.
  • The transitions are seamless, so all you feel is a supremely agile chassis.
Chassis
Suspension Systems

The TL’s exceptional ride and handling combination is derived in part from its racing-inspired double-wishbone front suspension system and sophisticated multi-link rear design.

  • The front upper and lower control arms provide precise wheel-position control and give the driver a superb, linear steering feel.
  • The design has been finessed to minimize body movement during braking and acceleration, and the wheels toe in—or point inward—when the suspension is compressed for improved stability over bumps, on curves and during braking.
  • The front suspension is mounted to an aluminum-alloy sub-frame, which isolates noise for a quieter ride.
  • Rear wheels are firmly positioned by upper A-arms, lower tubular links, and a toe link. The lower links are mounted to a floating sub-frame for noise reduction.
  • A low center of gravity and front & rear stabilizer bars diminish body roll.
  • TL SH-AWD models get revised suspension tuning to complement SH-AWD’s dynamics and for sportier handling.
Steering System

Precision-crafted electric rack-and-pinion steering allows drivers to feel how the wheels are encountering the road through their fingertips.

  • The TL achieves a firm, on-center feel at highway speeds while delivering a precise tactile response during curves, minimizing the need for small corrections.
  • Torque-sensing variable power assist makes steering easy during low-speed activities like parking.
  • At highway speeds, power assist is reduced for a firmer feel.
  • Electric assist does not drain engine power.
  • On models without SH-AWD, a torque steer reduction system reduces engine torque in first and second gears when torque steer is most likely to occur.
  • TL SH-AWD models get revised tuning for additional road feel.
Braking System

The TL brake system features a firm pedal feel that enables the precise deceleration and modulation demanded of high-performance driving.

  • 12.6-inch ventilated discs in the front and 13.2-inch solid discs in the rear comply readily upon demand.
  • The system comes with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist.
  • TL SH-AWD models have additional brake cooling from ducts in the front air dam.
Body Structure

The TL body structure enhances acceleration, braking and turning response through weight-saving measures, while improved body rigidity allows the suspension to be tuned with greater precision.

  • Increased use of high-strength steel simultaneously enhances the unit-body’s overall strength while helping to reduce weight.
  • Additional weight savings come from using aluminum for the hood, the front suspension subframe, and rear suspension knuckles.
  • A nearly flat underside reduces aerodynamic drag that helps enhance fuel economy and reduce interior noise levels.
Smooth & Quiet Ride

The TL engine provides smooth, vibration-free operation with best-in-class wind-noise performance.

  • Windshield noise is reduced as a result of three soft noise-absorbing layers sandwiched between two plates of acoustic glass and thick, 5mm side and rear glass.
  • Electronically controlled engine mounts reduce engine noise.
  • An aluminum steering hanging rack reduces vibration.
  • Strengthened chassis mounting points improve suspension isolation.

Climate Control
Automatic Climate Control

The TL dual-zone, dual-mode automatic climate control system allows the driver and front passenger to create their own microclimates.

  • Set your desired temperature and airflow distribution however you like, and your front passenger can do the same.
  • When alone, the driver can easily switch off the dual setting and set the whole cabin to a single temperature.
  • Almost all climate control functions can be operated by voice commands.
  • An air filtration system helps keep particulates, dust, and pollen out of the cabin.
GPS-linked Temperature Control

On models equipped with the Technology Package, the automatic climate control system can further enhance occupants’ comfort level by tracking the sun’s position and intensity.

  • The GPS10 positioning technology monitors the sun’s location relative to the car’s position, while a sensor on the dash measures the sun’s intensity.

The Bluetooth®11 HandsFreeLink® system works with many Bluetooth®-enabled cell phones to let you receive and initiate phone calls through the TL audio system without ever taking your hands off the wheel.

  • A one-time pairing process on a compatible phone enables you to communicate wirelessly.
  • When available, an incoming call will display the number if it is entered into the speed-dial list.
  • The phone can then be operated through the vehicle audio system without ever leaving your pocket or purse.
  • On models with the Technology Package, you can download all of your compatible phone’s numbers at one time into the navigation database.10

Safety & Security

Braking & Stability
Braking Systems

The TL’s disc brakes are backed up by several electronic systems to provide you with enhanced braking under any circumstance.

  • The anti-lock braking system (ABS) helps you retain steering control in emergency braking by preventing the wheels from locking up, while still letting them achieve their maximum level of stopping.
  • The Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system uses the ABS system to direct braking power among the four wheels, depending on their load, to help optimize braking effectiveness.
  • The Brake Assist system detects emergency braking by the driver by monitoring the speed at which the brake pedal is depressed and stepping in to ensure the ABS system is activated. Brake Assist terminates immediately upon release of the brake pedal.
Vehicle Stability Assist

The Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)12 system monitors stability factors to detect oversteer or understeer, and if one is detected, various TL systems step in to avoid the problem and keep the vehicle stable.

  • VSA continually monitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individual wheel speeds, steering angle, and vehicle yaw rate.
  • If potential oversteer or understeer is detected, SH-AWD® models will redirect power among the front wheels and each of the rear wheels to maintain stability.
  • All models will, when necessary, reduce engine torque and use the anti-lock braking system (ABS) to apply brakes to each wheel as needed to help stabilize the vehicle.
  • The response is so quick that the instability may be corrected before the driver even knows it’s occurring.
  • 12 VSA is not a substitute for safe driving. It cannot correct the vehicle's course in every situation or compensate for reckless driving. Control of the vehicle always remains with the driver.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Since an under-inflated tire impedes handling and can be a safety hazard, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) uses pressure sensors mounted in each wheel that send readings to a central electronic control unit. The system then evaluates whether the pressure is up to an acceptable range.

  • If a reading is approximately 25% below the recommended level, the TL will alert the driver through the Multi-Information Display (MID) located on the instrument panel.
  • The under-inflated tire will be indicated, along with the individual pressure for all four tires.
  • The pressure display can be accessed any time, using the MID controls on the steering wheel.
  • As useful as TMPS is, it is still recommended that you manually check your tires on a regular basis.
Body Structure
Advanced Compatibility Engineering

Acura utilizes Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes.

  • The ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle.
  • This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.
  • Every Acura designed with this system and tested by NHTSA, has received a 5 stars rating on their frontal impact test.
Restraint Systems
Airbag System

The TL is equipped with a sophisticated 6-airbag system consisting of two front and two front side airbags, and two side curtain airbags that provide coverage for the front and outboard rear seats.

  • The front airbags are equipped with two-stage, multiple-threshold inflators. One or both airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seat belt usage and other factors. Frontal airbags are designed to supplement the seat belts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes.
  • Sensors in the front passenger seat determine if it is empty or if the passenger is too small for the passenger’s front airbag to deploy safely, and disengage the front passenger’s front airbag, if necessary.
  • The front passenger seat is equipped with the Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), which uses sensors in the seatback to determine the height and position of the passenger. The system will deactivate the passenger’s front-side airbag if a child or a small-statured adult is leaning into the airbag deployment path.
  • In a side impact, side curtain airbags deploy downward from just above the doorframes on the impacted side to help protect both front and outboard rear seat occupants.
Seat Belts & Active Front Head Restraints

All five seating positions in the TL have 3-point belts. The front belts are equipped with automatic tensioning and load-limiter systems and the front seats are equipped with active head restraints.

  • Automatic tensioning belts react in the first milliseconds of an impact to automatically tighten the belts and help hold a front seat occupant in position against the seatback.
  • To help prevent the automatic tensioning belt from causing undue pressure on the chest, load limiters slightly relieve belt tension, as needed, to help soften the force.
  • In a rear-end collision, if a front seat occupant’s body is pushed against the seatback, the pressure to the seatback is transmitted from the lumbar plate, pushing the active head restraint upward and forward to reduce the gap between the occupant’s head and seat head restraint.
  • The active head restraint diminishes impact forces on the head, neck and spine during a collision, helping to reduce the likelihood of whiplash injuries.
Child Safety
Child Safety

The TL has several features addressing child safety, from sophisticated airbag sensors to anchors that secure child seats.

  • The Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) utilizes sensors in the front passenger's seatback to detect if the occupant is a child or small-statured adult.
  • The passenger front-side airbag will deactivate if a child or a small-statured adult is leaning into the airbag deployment path.
  • Front windows and the moonroof have an auto-reverse feature that helps prevent them from closing if a finger or other obstacle is encountered.
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) anchors plus upper-tether anchors in the rear seat allow LATCH-compatible child seats to be installed in the outboard positions without the use of seat belts.
Security
Security

The TL has remote keyless entry for both convenience and security.

  • The remote unlocks the driver's door with one press, and a second will unlock all the doors.
  • A panic button activates the car's horn and lights.
  • An alarm system will sound the horn, flash the headlights, and disable the ignition in the event someone attempts to break into your TL.
